7 weeks old today - Latest update

The boys are a rough and tumble bunch!  Not a sissy among them.  They play hard, sleep hard, stand in the food bowl when they eat, flip the water bowl constantly, and are a typical bunch of pushy males.  But they are also very sweet and happy.  They have had lots of excitement and experiences in the past few weeks.  They traveled by car to Scituate MA to visit friends around the 4th of July and got to play and be handled by lots of new hands.  They have had countless visitors here at the house.  They spent 1 1/2 weeks with co-breeder Kim while we went on vacation.  They were wormed for the first time.  They went to the vet this week for their first health checks and shots.  And last but not least, they are now allowed to play outside in the sheltie yard.  Their world just keeps getting bigger and bigger!  Check out the latest pictures in the next post.
The puppies did great at their first Vet visit on Tuesday and had their first DHLPP shot.  Second worming will be next week.  Their weights were as follows:
Tek - 3.6 lb.
Youk - 5 lb.
Pede - 3.8 lb.
Tito - 3.2 lb.
Papi - 4 lb.

Field trip

The puppies are on a field trip this morning.  I set up a pen in the mud room, which is really an open area to our sun room / family room and brought the puppies out for a visit.  They weren't sure what to make of it at first, but after a minute or two they started toddling around, exploring.  Reilly, our 8 month old orange kitty, was completely captivated by them.  Of course I won't let him in the room alone with the boys.  Reilly happens to be a really good mouser, but these guys are no rodents, and off limits to him!!  Youk was the first to really start checking things out.  He even got a baby tug toy and showed it off to his brothers, trying to get them to play.  The others played half-heartedly, still a bit confused by their surroundings.  It didn't take long before the experience was too much for them and now the team is sacked out, no doubt resting up for round two in a little while!

Camera batteries are recharging, so photos will have to wait for a little while.  Stay tuned!

Big Papi

3 weeks old

The boys turned 3 weeks old on Thursday.  They have found their little sheltie voices and are toddling around on unsteady legs.  Getting stronger by the day though, so they'll be tearing around here in no time.  Because of some problems Silvi had earlier in the week the vet has recommended that I wean the puppies now.  Started the process this morning, but the only puppy remotely interested in trying the formula/rice cereal concoction was Big Papi.  No surprise there!  Tonight I gave them another meal and all blue boys (Tek, Youk and Papi) ate, but Pede and Tito didn't show any interest at all, other than putting a leg or two into the bowl!  I'm sure they'll get the hang of it soon.  For now they will still get to spend time with their Mom but on a much more limited basis.  Hope to have them completely off of her in the next few days.  Earlier than I would like, but it is necessary.  Enjoy the latest photos!
What's THIS??  Where's MOM??
Big Papi likes it.  Tito steps in it.

The Team

The puppies arrived early on Thursday June 9, 2011.  Silvi had 5 boys!  As always she is an excellent mother.  They are all fat and healthy.  I only have photos of them the morning of their birth, but will be taking some new ones very shortly.  Since they are all boys I have nicknamed them "the team".  They all carry nicknames of some of the Boston Red Sox players.  Here are some team "stats":

This is Puppy #1 - Youk.  He is a bi blue with quite a bit of black on his body.  He weighed 9 3/4 oz. at birth!

To the right is Tito, a cute bi black puppy.  He was 9 1/2 oz. at birth.  He has a full white collar with a black spot in the middle of his rough.  Very distinguishing marking!

To the left is puppy #3, a tri.  His nickname is Pede, after Dustin Pedroia.  He was one of the smaller boys at birth, weighing in at 8.5 oz.  He is a very plain tri, but I can already tell he has a lot of spunk.

Here is Tek, named after the Red Sox team Captain and Catcher. He is a bi blue and has a mostly black and white face.  He weighed 8 1/8 oz. at birth.

And last but certainly not least, here is Big Papi.  He was the biggest at birth, weighing in at 10 oz, and he is still the biggest!  At first we thought he might be a blue merle, but he is also a bi blue, like 2 of his brothers.

All the puppies gained weight quickly.  Each one gained about an ounce their first day.  Since it is obvious that they are getting enough nutrition from their mother I have not bothered to continue weighing them.  Suffice it to say that we will have to worry about size with this litter.  They are a hefty bunch!!  They all opened their eyes promptly right around 2 weeks old.  Tito was the first and the rest followed shortly thereafter.  They are at the cute stage where they are learning to play and bark.  They are trying to toddle around but mostly fall over because of the bulk of their little bodies.  Those legs need to strengthen a bit before they can get around better!  Stay tuned for more updates.  I will post new pictures shortly.
